概要 Description
Transition-metal oxides exhibit several unusual/useful physical properties such as colossal magnetoresistance, large thermoelectric power, or metal-insulator transitions. Also, transparent conductive oxides are very important materials in modern society. This course offers an opportunity to study the electronic structure of these compounds using photoemission spectroscopy and 1st-principles band-structure calculations to clarify the electronic-structure origin of such properties.
Under the guidance of his/her instructor, the course student should establish his/her research theme and determine the concrete goals. To achieve the goals, the student should gather information, critically discuss it, and then develop experimental plans. He/she should perform photoemission experiments and analysis, and develop the skills of ultra-high vacuum experiments. Based on the above activity, the student will be able to develop the basic ability for research as a young independent scientist. A part of the aim of this course is to let the student have all the abilities of (1) through (3) in the diploma policies of the doctoral course.
(1) Establishing the research theme: Surveying the past literature on topics the course student are interested in, he/she should be able to judge what are (un)resolved issues. Based on this survey, the student should be able to establish his/her fruitful research theme. (2) Acquiring the ability to make experimental plans and perform them: The student should be able to make an experimental plan and perform it as a team leader of a few master course/undergrad students under the advisory of experts who are post-docs or above. (2) Acquirement of expertise: Understanding research papers in detail by surveying and checking references textbooks etc. (3) Development of English skills: Understanding research papers written in English in very detail
