概要 Description

This course is based on items 1 and 4 of the curriculum policy, with a particular focus on item 4: 'Being able to observe scientific phenomena and interpret the results independently.'

Examples of research topics include:
(1) Exploration of new quasicrystals and approximant crystals
(2) Evaluation of electrical and magnetic properties of quasicrystals and approximant crystals
(3) Development of novel permanent magnets
(4) Development of new catalytic alloys.

This course is based on items 1 and 4 of the curriculum policy, with particular emphasis on item 4: the ability to independently observe scientific phenomena and logically interpret experimental results.

At the beginning of the academic year, students select one research topic from those presented during the guidance session. Through a survey of relevant literature, they first acquire an understanding of the research background and objectives. Students then proceed step by step to learn materials design concepts, sample preparation techniques, experimental and measurement methods, data acquisition, and quantitative data analysis. The obtained results are critically examined in relation to the initial hypotheses, and their physical and chemical significance is discussed. The outcomes of the research are systematically organized and compiled into a graduation thesis.

The research focuses primarily on functional materials such as quasicrystals and approximant crystals. Students are expected to deepen their understanding of the relationships among structure, electronic states, and physical properties, and to explore how novel properties and functions can be realized based on rational design principles. When appropriate, multiple experimental and analytical techniques are combined, and attention is paid to the reliability and reproducibility of experimental data.

Examples of research topics include:
(1) Exploration and structural characterization of new quasicrystals and approximant crystals
(2) Evaluation of electrical and magnetic properties of quasicrystals and approximant crystals, and examination of underlying design principles
(3) Development of novel permanent magnet materials based on control of electronic states and crystal structures
(4) Synthesis of new catalytic and functional alloys through structural and compositional design

Class plan

Attendance at all in-person class sessions is required in principle. Student performance will be evaluated comprehensively based on engagement in research activities, experimental and analytical skills, research outcomes, and the quality of the graduation thesis, in accordance with the stated evaluation criteria.

(1) Synthesis of Novel Hypermaterials (Quasicrystals and Approximant Crystals)
Quasicrystals and approximant crystals constitute a novel class of materials characterized by icosahedral clusters as their fundamental structural units. Elucidating their structures and fundamental properties is an important challenge in materials science. In this theme, students explore and synthesize new quasicrystals and approximants, and evaluate their crystal structures, electronic states, and physical properties. The goal is to create materials with unprecedented characteristics, as well as to discover new physical and chemical phenomena and develop new concepts in materials science.

(2) Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Hypermaterials
This theme focuses on elucidating the electronic and magnetic properties of previously discovered hypermaterials in order to uncover novel phenomena intrinsic to these systems. In particular, magnetic transitions in icosahedral cluster solids—originally discovered in our laboratory—represent a key research topic whose underlying mechanisms remain to be fully understood. Using precision measurement techniques such as SQUID magnetometry, students investigate magnetic transitions and magnetic ordering in detail, aiming to clarify their physical origins and contribute to the establishment of a new paradigm in materials science.

(3) Development of Novel Permanent Magnets
The development of high-performance permanent magnets that operate reliably at elevated temperatures is an urgent technological challenge. In this theme, students aim to develop novel permanent magnet materials with excellent high-temperature performance. Special emphasis is placed on controlling grain boundaries and microstructures to achieve superior magnetic properties, such as high coercivity and high electrical resistivity.

(4) Applied Research on Precious Metals
This theme involves applied research aimed at imparting new functionalities and added value to precious metals such as gold and platinum. Through structural control and alloy design, various properties—including catalytic performance, electronic properties, and environmental durability—are evaluated to assess their potential as advanced functional materials.
