概要 Description

This course is to provide Ph.D. course level students with the conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and analytical skills necessary to deal critically with the rapidly changing cancer science and to understand the applications of drugs and to perform research experiment.

This subject focuses on research on "Cancer Stem Cells" and "Natural History of cancer", and conducts experiments and data science using biological cancer methods and omics data sets including genomics data.

Purpose: Learning and training about hypothesis setting, examination and setting of experimental conditions, analysis of experimental results, logical thinking, and presentation.

The aim of this course is to provide Ph.D. course level students with the conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and analytical skills necessary to deal critically with the rapidly changing cancer science and to understand the applications of drugs and to perform research experiment.
Outcomes

Learning and training about setting of research goals and hypotheses, examination and establishment of experimental conditions, data collection and analysis, logical thinking, presentation, and paper preparation.

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:
・ Recognize and recall terms and concepts in cancer science,
・ Describe and explain methods and theories,
・ Compare and contrast alternative theories or approaches in terms of their underlying
processes,
・ Evaluate studies in terms of their methods, results, conclusions and implications,
・ Apply theories or findings to real world situations.

Course notes prerequisites

Research requires trial and error, and you should independently investigate about the necessary items and develop a research attitude that you think for yourself.

The students are expected to 1) write the lab notebook carefully; 2) attend all classes and be ontime; 3) turn in assignments when they are due.

Preparation and review

We highly recommend to prepare and review each experimental plan in detail by reading the reference books and scientific papers. This course will be more or less demanding depending on the senior level in Cancer Science. In case of difficulties, it is recommended to discuss with Instructor, lab members or collaborators in detail.
Performance grading policy

Grading will be decided based on attendance and attitude(60%), lab reports (20%), and the quality of the students’experimental performance (20%) in the lab.
