Students will acquire knowledge of molecular cellular biology, immunology, genetics, and so on, and learn methodologies used for research. Based on that, students will conduct a research to uncover unsolved problems in such area, summarize and present their results at internal as well as external meetings, and gain a deeper insight through discussion with colleagues.
Students will understand unsolved questions in the field of immunology and acquire an ability to solve such questions through research. Students will also be able to acquire skills to return the results to society and to put the fruits to their carrier. By the end of the final semester, students will be able to write a paper about the results of their research as the first author and publish it in an international scientific journal.

[Outline] 1) Students need to collect and read current scientific papers on the corresponding research area to evaluate a progress of their own research and to revise their plan if necessary. 2) Students need to discuss on technics and devises required for their research with colleagues, and, if necessary, collaborate with other laboratories to introduce new technologies. 3) After starting their research, students need to present the results every month in the lab meeting, discuss about the results with colleagues to find out solutions to any problems. 4) Students need to present their results in the institute's seminar once a year to discuss on the results and future plans with members of the institute. 5) Students are expected to present their results at external scientific meetings to get presentation skills and to write a paper and submit it to an international scientific journal to learn how to write a paper in English. 6) Through these activities, students will develop an ability to establish themselves as a professional researcher. [Workflow] Students will proceed research according to the general research plan, and present the results of the research at the external meeting of scientific society. Students will also write a paper describing the results in English and publish it in one of international scientific journals. [Examples of research themes] 1. Molecular mechanisms for B-cell immune responses: B-cell intrinsic mechanisms for T-cell-dependent- and T-cell-independent-immune responses. 2. Mechanisms for regulation of germinal center B cell development, and maintenance and activation of memory B cells (Bmem) and long-lived plasma cells (LLPC): Molecular mechanisms of somatic hypermutation in the germinal center, class-switching, and induction and regulation of differentiation, survival, activation of the Bmem and LLPC. 3. Immune response by tissue-resident B cells: Mechanisms how IgA or IgG antibodies are produced from B cells resident in non-lymphoid tissues such as intestine and respiratory tract. 4. Physiology of allergy development: Mechanisms for long-lasting IgE production from B cells. 5. Functional analyses and clinical application of tumor-infiltrating B cells (TIBC): Analyses of subsets, repertoire, function of TIBC and creation of clinical application of TIBC, using tumor-developing mouse models. Work experience of the instructor
