概要 Description

Students will conduct research in accordance with the research plan formulated at the beginning of their first year. While advancing their projects, they will discuss the results obtained both within and outside the research group, continuously clarifying research questions and challenges. Through this process, students will acquire the techniques and methodologies necessary to explore and develop previously uncharted areas.

As a continuation of Special Research I, this course is taken in the second year of the master’s program. Through close discussions with the academic advisor, students will further develop their logical thinking and problem-solving skills while working on their individual research topics in areas such as molecular assembly chemistry, molecular science, organic reaction chemistry, materials chemistry, energy chemistry, environmental chemistry, and industrial chemistry. Students will aim to achieve their research objectives and compile their results in a master’s thesis.
目的 Objectives

Based on the research conducted thus far, students engage in detailed discussions with the supervising faculty member to plan their work. By fully applying the knowledge of organic chemistry and experimental techniques acquired to date, they explore new research topics and address unresolved problems in chemistry. Through these research activities, the course aims to enable students to develop sufficient competence as researchers and chemical professionals.
Outcomes

Students will develop the ability to conduct a variety of experiments safely and accurately. They will take on challenging experiments with initiative and acquire stable experimental techniques that enable them to obtain highly reproducible results.

Students will learn to conduct research efficiently. While managing coursework, mentoring junior students, serving as teaching assistants, and preparing for job searches, they will develop planning skills that allow them to carry out multiple experiments in a single day.

Students will learn to consider the direction of their research while constantly being aware of its academic significance. They will collect the latest information not only from closely related fields but also from a broad range of disciplines, enabling them to critically evaluate their own research. They will also develop the ability to critique and provide constructive advice on the research of others.

Students will develop the ability to present research and engage in academic discussions. They will learn to respond appropriately to questions and participate in discussions in laboratory meetings, academic conferences, and master’s thesis presentations.

Students conduct literature surveys on reactions catalyzed by transition metal complexes and reactions employing organometallic compounds in order to understand the background of their research. They acquire methods for collecting foreign-language literature and develop skills for rapid reading. Through close discussions with their research supervisor, they formulate a concrete research plan. By synthesizing starting substrates, optimizing reaction conditions, and purifying and identifying products, students learn how to handle organic compounds and how to operate analytical instruments.

In the master’s program, students are expected to pursue research with an awareness of achieving higher-quality and more meaningful outcomes.

First half:
Students review and summarize the research conducted in their first year, clarify what can and should be accomplished during the remaining year, and devote themselves to their research. In parallel, they supervise undergraduate students, become more deeply involved in laboratory management, and develop professionally and personally.

Second half:
Students participate in academic conferences related to organic (organometallic) chemistry to collect information on the latest research trends and incorporate these insights into their own work. The research results obtained are compiled into a master’s thesis. Students also acquire skills for preparing presentation manuscripts and slides in order to deliver clear and effective presentations.
