概要 Description

We are living in a data-driven world. Not only big data analytics, but also the everyday data used in business reports and presentations, play a critical role in decision-making. Visualization and storytelling with numbers and figures are especially important.

When used effectively, data visualization can help us persuasively communicate our ideas to managers, colleagues, and clients.

In this course, students will learn effective strategies for presenting research findings and business reports using data. We will compare effective and ineffective examples of data visualization to understand best practices. Students will also engage in hands-on exercises using real datasets as part of in-class activities.

This course consists of three parts:

  1. Lectures on the fundamental principles of data visualization

  2. Practical training in data visualization techniques

  3. Data-driven report presentations

目的 Objectives

In this course, students will be trained to present information and data in ways that are easier for audiences to understand. Throughout our education, we learn language and mathematics separately. On the language side, we learn how to construct sentences and develop stories. In mathematics, we learn how to interpret and analyze numbers. However, these two domains are rarely integrated.

This course aims to teach students how to tell compelling stories with numbers, particularly in the context of business decision-making. Advances in technology have enabled organizations to collect and store vast amounts of data, creating a growing need to interpret and extract meaningful insights from it. The ability to visualize data and communicate it effectively through storytelling is essential for transforming raw data into actionable information that supports better decision-making.

This course also aims to support the department’s Diploma Policies and “Goals of Specialized Education” of Tokyo University of Science, which state:

“Under the basic policy of addressing various issues arising in diverse business environments—such as globalization and global environmental challenges—we cultivate both theoretical and practical thinking based on knowledge from the humanities and social sciences.” and “We foster the ability to lead problem-solving initiatives using digital technology.”

"The ability to identify new problems, work proactively with others to solve them collaboratively, and co-create beyond the boundaries of specialized fields."

到達目標 Outcomes
Data visualization(and communicating with data in general) sits at the intersection of science and art. This course will be good for anyone who needs to communicate something to someone using data. This includes: analysts sharing the results of their work, students visualizing thesis data, managers needing to communicate in a data‐driven way, and leaders informing their board of the business.
During the class, students can get and develop their ability to make a good report with data. And also they can have some experience in a presentation to persuade the audience in English.

履修上の注意 Course notes prerequisites
All class materials and lectures are in English. Assignments and presentations must be written and spoken in English.
And during the class, we will have various practices with PPT/EXCEL software to make data visualization. So all students must bring their laptops(which have Microsoft excel software) to the classroom every time.
To be conducted face-to-face; If you miss more than 7 classes, you will automatically fail this course.

準備学習・復習 Preparation and review
Students will have a small practice or problem to solve related data visualization during the class. After the class, they have to submit the practice result or problem-solving report to LETUS.
2 hours of reviewing lecture content + 2 hours of preparation for the development standard are required.
成績評価方法 Performance grading policy
Short tests 25%
Exercise/Practice results in every class 25%
Final assignment presentation 30%
Evaluation & participation 20%
You have to do a performance evaluation for other groups' presentations. If you do not do this, you will lose the 'presentation points' for your grade. The peer review for your contribution within the group will be. If your group members give you a poor score, your grade will be down from your original score.
