概要 Description
In this course, the main objective is to improve the student's English oral communication skills, with an emphasis on developing their communicative "effectiveness" (whether they can convey their ideas in English regardless of the grammar and vocabulary limitations they may have)  as opposed to their communicative “accuracy” (whether they can speak "correctly" in English or not). This will be achieved through a series of communicative tasks that will help students speak more fluently and effectively get their message across when communicating in English. In this sense, students are expected to actively participate in class and interact with other students in English, in pair and group discussion activities throughout the course.  In addition, this course will also improve students' intercultural communicative skills, as all teaching materials and learning tasks are designed for developing students' intercultural awareness and for helping them transcend possible cultural barriers that may affect their ability to orally communicate with foreigners.

目的 Objectives
The main goals of this class are to improve English listening and communication skills. Specifically, to develop the students' strategic competence, conversational speaking skills, and intercultural communicative skills.
到達目標 Outcomes
Students who are successful in this class will be able to...
1. improve their listening comprehension of authentic English materials.
2. improve their spoken fluency by concentrating on effectively conveying their ideas in English
4. learn to use communicative strategies for overcoming communication barriers and breakdowns
5. broaden their vocabulary and thematic knowledge of a variety of cross-cultural topics
6. develop a greater intercultural awareness of the sort of cultural issues that affect their ability to communicate with foreigners

履修上の注意 Course notes prerequisites
1- TOEIC REQUISITES
You are required to take the TOEIC test at the end of the first semester and second semesters. One-third or 33% of the students’ final grades will be assessed on the basis of their TOEIC scores. Note that students who scored fewer than 100 points as a raw score on their TOEIC results, will earn 0 points for their 33% (1/3) overall grade.

2- LETUS ACCESS REQUISITES

All course schedules, class guidelines, class assignments, and test requirements/evaluation criteria will be posted through the TUS LETUS platform. Ability/knowledge of how to access and navigate this platform is mandatory, hence, it is required for all students to familiarize themselves with the LETUS Manual (available directly in LETUS).

3 - ATTENDANCE REQUISITES
Regular attendance is essential, not optional. If you are absent to 33% or more of the classes you will automatically fail this course. Since there are 15 classes, if you have any combination 5 or more absences you will automatically fail the class and be prevented from presenting the final test.  An absence (and the rules that govern them) are defined as follows:

(a) The student is considered "absent" if he/she/they don’t show up to class and does not communicate to the teacher a valid reason for being absent whilst proving it with a "公欠制度" or a “公認欠席届け” emitted by the student's department, supervisor or the TUS student's affairs office. This also applies to being absent due to a medical reason. Merely writing to the teacher saying " I am not able to attend class due to X medical reason" does not constitute a reason for removing the absence. In order for the absence to be removed, students need to still provide some sort of proof at some point of their medical condition. For example, a "診断書" and/or the "医療費領収書" you get when visiting a clinic/hospital are all suitable proofs of your medical condition.  No exceptions.

(b)The student is considered "absent" if he/she/they come to class after 20 minutes of the class having had started, leaves the 20 minutes class early, or is not in the classroom for more than 20 minutes.

(c) The student is considered "late" if he/she/they come to class late but within 20 minutes of the class having had started.

(d) Attendance to class will be verified as soon as the chime sounds by doing a roll call.  If at that point the student is not in the classroom , he/she will be marked as "absent". If the student comes to class within 20 minutes  after the roll call, he/she can be marked as “late”. However, for the student to be marked as  “late”, it is the student’s responsibility to communicate with the teacher (preferably during a class break or at the end of the class ) to make sure the teacher changed the student's status as “Late” and not “Absent”. If the student doesn’t communicate with the teacher about this by the end of the class, the student most likely will remain as "absent" for that class.

(e) Rule (a) explained above about providing proof also applies when being late. If the student can prove that he/she was late due to an unavoidable reason, proof must be provided of this (for example, a train delay slip or anything similar that evidences the reason for being late) in order for the lateness to be removed. Without this proof, the student will remain as “late”. No exceptions.

(e) Because of rules (b) and (c) explained above, if the student needs to leave the restroom during class for any reason ( for example, due to an emergency or for going to the restroom), the student must make sure to communicate this to the teacher at some point during the class . If the student leaves the classroom without properly justifying it to the teacher,  there is a risk of being put as "late" or even "absent" for that class, even if the student arrived on time for the start of that particular class.

(f) 3x “Lates” equal 1x “Absence”

準備学習・復習 Preparation and review
Students must complete homework assignments before the next class. Some homework assignments will review previous class information, whilst other assignments will need to be completed in order to prepare for the class to follow. Students should check LETUS after class in order to review lesson content, and before class in order to download any required materials and resources. It is recommended that students spend at least an hour outside of class time on homework and review tasks.
