概要 Description
This course examines the functions of DNA and RNA, chromatin and the epigenome, the epitranscriptome including RNA modifications and editing, and their relationships with cellular function. Research is grounded in the molecular biology of nucleic acids, molecular and cellular biology, and the regulation of gene expression. Depending on the research question, students combine molecular and cellular experiments with next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis and bioinformatics. In the first year of the doctoral program, students define their research questions, establish a foundation for research, and refine their research plans on the basis of preliminary findings.
Students will connect specialist knowledge and research methods to their own questions. Through discussion with their supervisor, they will develop the foundation needed to take an active role in planning research, conducting experiments and analyses, critically examining results, and reporting their work.
1. Evaluate the evidence and limitations of previous studies and explain their own research question and hypothesis. 2. Select experimental and analytical methods appropriate to the research objective and develop a plan that specifies controls, replicates, and procedures. 3. Conduct experiments and analyses in accordance with research ethics and safety requirements, and document procedures, conditions, and data in a reproducible manner. 4. Assess data quality and the limitations of interpretation, and propose improvements to the research plan based on preliminary findings. 5. Present the background, methods, results, and next research questions as distinct elements, and incorporate feedback from discussion into the research plan. This course corresponds to semester 2 after enrollment for spring-entry students and semester 1 for autumn-entry students. At the start of each semester, students and their supervisor review prior learning and research records and agree on the research question, methods to be learned, deliverables, and assessment criteria. If tasks are adjusted to the research stage, the course learning outcomes are maintained and the reasons for the changes are documented. Students participate in weekly progress meetings, study sessions, journal presentations, and related activities, and seek advice promptly when problems arise. They follow research ethics, safety, citation, and research data management requirements. Specific experimental and analytical methods are selected according to the research question. Teaching type(Active Learning)

Before research activities, students read relevant original articles and reviews and study the background and principles of the methods. Before experiments and analyses, they consider objectives, controls, replicates, decision criteria, and responses to multiple possible outcomes. Afterwards, they review records and data quality and summarize comparisons with previous studies, interpretations, remaining problems, and proposals for further validation. Required study time follows the conditions specified at course registration. Performance grading policy
Assessment comprises initiative and independence in research (50%) and the quality of the research, findings, and presentation and discussion (50%). The first component assesses planning and execution, research records, problem identification, and improvement. The second assesses methodological appropriateness, critical appraisal of data, the logic of interpretation, and the quality of explanations and responses. Assessment evidence includes research plans, experimental and analytical records, regular progress reports, and an end-of-semester report. Achievement is assessed against the learning outcomes appropriate to the stage of study. Grades do not depend solely on obtaining expected results, the volume of data, or acceptance of a paper. Evaluation of academic achievement
