概要 Description
In this course, the main objective is to improve your comprehensive reading and writing skills. Although some vocabulary and grammar will be covered through the class homework, this course’s main objective is not just for you to learn new grammar and vocabulary. Instead, we will use the reading assignments as a starting point for you to improve your English oral communication and critical thinking skills. In other words, the basic teaching logic of this class is: first you will read, then answer some comprehension questions about the reading, then read more about the topic and/or watch audiovisual information about it, and then you will speak with your classmates about what you read and give your opinions about it. At the end, you will write your opinions about one of the topics covered in class, using argumentative rhetorical models in an Opinion Essay in-class assignment.
目的 Objectives
- To improve the student's English comprehensive reading skills.
- To foster opportunities in which students can practice and develop their English oral rhetorical skills. - To develop the student's critical thinking skills. - To improve the student's English argumentative writing skills. 到達目標 Outcomes
At the end of the course, it is expected for students to be able to comprehend level-appropriate English reading materials, to be able to discuss these topics verbally as well as to put their ideas in writing using argumentative rhetorical models. In addition, students are expected to attain the proficiency levels outlined in the CanDo list (aligned with CEFR) provided in the following link: https://tus.box.com/s/98kx6qfrqts8i83po45fdncnivm5k2b3

1- TEXTBOOK REQUISITES:
Students are required to purchase the following book by the 5th week of class: Macintyre, P. & Bohlke D. Reading Explorer Level 2. Student Book Split Edition 2A. Third Edition. Text Only. ISBN: 9780357123652 2- LETUS ACCESS REQUISITES All course schedules, class guidelines, class assignments, and test requirements/evaluation criteria will be posted through the TUS LETUS platform. Ability/knowledge of how to access and navigate this platform is mandatory, hence, students are required to familiarize themselves with the LETUS Manual (which is accesible directly from LETUS). 3 - ATTENDANCE REQUISITES Regular attendance is essential, not optional. If you have 5 or more absences you will automatically fail the class and be prevented from presenting the final test. An absence (and the rules that govern them) are defined as follows: (a) The student is considered "absent" if he/she/they don’t show up to class and does not communicate to the teacher a valid reason for being absent whilst proving it with a "公欠制度" or a “公認欠席届け” emitted by the student's department, supervisor or the TUS student's affairs office. This also applies to being absent due to a medical reason. Merely writing to the teacher saying " I am not able to attend class due to X medical reason" does not constitute a reason for removing the absence. In order for the absence to be removed, students need to still provide some sort of proof at some point of their medical condition. For example, a "診断書" and/or the "医療費領収書" you get when visiting a clinic/hospital are all suitable proofs of your medical condition. In the case of absences due to bereavement, then some sort of documentation proving this is also necessary. No exceptions. (b)The student is considered "absent" if he/she/they come to class after 20 minutes of the class having had started, leaves the 20 minutes class early, or is not in the classroom for more than 20 minutes. (c) The student is considered "late" if he/she/they come to class late but within 20 minutes of the class having had started. (d) Attendance to class will be verified as soon as the chime sounds by doing a roll call. If at that point the student is not in the classroom , he/she will be marked as "absent". If the student comes to class within 20 minutes after the roll call, he/she can be marked as “late”. However, for the student to be marked as “late”, it is the student’s responsibility to communicate with the teacher (preferably during a class break or at the end of the class ) to make sure the teacher changed the student's status as “Late” and not “Absent”. If the student doesn’t communicate with the teacher about this by the end of the class, the student most likely will remain as "absent" for that class. (e) Rule (a) explained above about providing proof also applies when being late. If the student can prove that he/she was late due to an unavoidable reason, proof must be provided of this (for example, a train delay slip or anything similar that evidences the reason for being late) in order for the lateness to be removed. Without this proof, the student will remain as “late”. No exceptions. (e) Because of rules (b) and (c) explained above, if the student needs to leave the restroom during class for any reason ( for example, due to an emergency or for going to the restroom), the student must make sure to communicate this to the teacher at some point during the class . If the student leaves the classroom without properly justifying it to the teacher, there is a risk of being put as "late" or even "absent" for that class, even if the student arrived on time for the start of that particular class. (f) 2x “Lates” equal 1x “Absence” アクティブ・ラーニング科目 Teaching type(Active Learning)

準備学習・復習 Preparation and review
Students must complete homework assignments before the next class. Some homework assignments will review previous class information, whilst other assignments will need to be completed in order to prepare for the class to follow. Students should check LETUS after class in order to review lesson content, and before class in order to download any required materials and resources. It is recommended that students spend at least an hour outside of class time on homework and review tasks.
成績評価方法 Performance grading policy
A comprehensive guide of all of this course's guidelines will be posted in LETUS at the beginning of the course and briefly explained on the first day of class. Students will be given two weeks to read the given guidelines and confirm their understanding of its contents via a checklist in LETUS. 学修成果の評価 Evaluation of academic achievement
