概要 Description
Transition-metal oxides exhibit several unusual/useful physical properties such as colossal magnetoresistance, large thermoelectric power, or metal-insulator transitions. Also, transparent conductive oxides are very important materials in modern society. This course offers an opportunity to study the electronic structure of these compounds using photoemission spectroscopy and 1st-principles band-structure calculations to clarify the electronic-structure origin of such properties.
The student should establish a concrete goal for his/her chosen research theme, gather information, critically discuss the information, and then develop experimental plans. He/she should perform photoemission experiments and analysis, and develop the skills needed for ultra-high vacuum experiments. Based on the above activities, the student will develop the basic ability to conduct research. Part of the aim of this course is to provide the student with the abilities spelled out in diploma policies (1)-(3) of the master's course.
(1) Acquisition of the ability to make experimental plans and carry them out: After surveying the literature, the student should be able to report what are (un)solved issues to his/her adviser. Based on this survey, the student should also be able to develop an experimental plan and perform it in a team of a few students under the detailed guidance of experts who are PhD candidates or above. (2) Acquisition of expertise: The student should be able to understand research papers by surveying and checking references textbooks etc. (3) Development of English skills: The student should be able to understand research papers written in English in detail.
