Class plan

A: Kazuyuki Kuchitsu <Food, environment, energy problems and plants>
Food, environment, and energy are recognized as the most important problems our society will face in the near future. To find solutions to these problems, interdisciplinary technological innovation to boost the power of plants that efficiently utilize solar energy by photosynthesis will be critical. In this lecture, the importance of plant research is discussed. We will discuss how plants live in comparison with other organisms such as animals and microorganisms and their evolution. The molecular bases of key processes in plant life, including photosynthesis, development, environmental adaptation, interaction with other organisms and information processing, will be discussed. Each student will consider the relationship between his/her specialized fields/interests and plants.

C: Ryuichi Nishihama <Plant breeding and genome editing>
Our diet is sustained by breeding that human beings have been doing for tens of thousands of years. However, it is becoming difficult to meet the demand for food, which is increasing year by year due to global environmental changes, population growth, and geopolitical risks, with classical breeding. In this lecture, we will focus on breeding of plants and will explain from classical breeding to molecular breeding using genetic recombination and genome editing in recent years.
