概要 Description

Many devices and services, across both private and public sectors, are designed and provided on the assumption of constant internet connectivity. In domains where the utilisation and sharing of data via the internet are fundamental, designing devices and services requires a comprehensive understanding of the components that constitute internet-based ecosystems, as well as the governance mechanisms that underpin them.

This course aims to deepen both technical and non-technical understanding of the components of ecosystems built upon internet-connected devices, including the internet and smartphones. In addition, students will examine theories of governance as institutional design that enable key elements—such as self-sovereign identity, technical standards specifications, and payment infrastructures—to function in an integrated manner. Through this, the course develops a theoretical framework for designing and operating services grounded in ecosystem and governance design.

In alignment with the diploma policy goal of cultivating “the ability to collaborate proactively with individuals from other disciplines and cultural backgrounds, based on sound ethical judgment, advanced specialised knowledge, research capabilities, and broad education,” the course places particular emphasis on developing a theoretical understanding of key issues in global data governance. These include data ethics, data sovereignty—especially self-sovereign identity—and frameworks such as Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI).

目的 Objectives

The objective of this course is to develop a theoretical framework for platform theory, standardisation theory, and related policy, technological strategies, stakeholder strategies and behaviours, as well as governance mechanisms. In addition, students will gain proficiency in theories of social implementation and applied domains aligned with the topics of their master’s theses.
Furthermore, in response to the advanced utilisation of AI and the increasing sophistication and complexity of data ecosystems (involving personal and industrial data), the course aims to cultivate—consistent with the diploma policy—the “ability to collaborate with individuals from other disciplines and cultural backgrounds” grounded in “sound ethical judgment.” To this end, students are expected not only to understand data ethics, governance design, and standardisation/platform theory, but also to acquire the capacity to apply these theories in practice.

Outcomes

The aim of this course is to enable students to comprehensively organise theories relevant to the social implementation of their research topics. Through this process, it seeks to develop their ability to critically interpret theoretical literature and to apply such theories to their own research, as well as to cultivate their capacity for rigorous theoretical thinking.

Course notes prerequisites

Students are expected to select reading materials in alignment with their own case analyses and research themes. In addition, as class discussions will focus on how the theories covered can be applied to each student’s research context, students must conduct a systematic review of their ongoing research and undertake appropriate preparation and follow-up based on this review.
The course assumes at least four hours of study outside class per week, including literature selection, critical reading, preparation of presentation materials, and review based on class discussions.
