概要 Description
Throughout my experience teaching English, my general impression is that many students often struggle to understand the meaning of each sentence, even though they have a vague idea of the general meaning of the whole text. There may be various reasons for this, but I believe that two major factors are a lack of understanding of the structure and syntax of English sentences, and a lack of vocabulary such as words and phrases.
This course is designed to address the above-mentioned issues, and its ultimate goal is to help students acquire advanced English reading comprehension skills through intensive reading of a variety of English texts, such as articles from English newspapers and magazines.
In recent years, there have been cases where governments and other organizations have controlled the media, limiting citizens’ access to information. In this course, we also focus on developing students’ media literacy, which can be defined as “the ability to encode and decode the symbols transmitted via media and synthesize, analyze and produce mediated messages” (“What is Media Literacy? Media Literacy Defined”, The National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE), https://namle.org/resources/media-literacy-defined/).
If you study hard, it is highly expected that you will be able to achieve a reading level of at least Grade Pre-1 on the Practical English Proficiency Test (EIKEN), 730 on the TOEIC test, or 500 on the PBT/ITP (61 on the iBT) for TOEFL.
目的 Objectives
• To accustom yourself to a variety of English texts, such as articles from English newspapers and magazines, through intensive reading.
• To understand the basic structure and syntax of English sentences.
• To enhance vocabulary such as words and phrases.
• To cultivate and develop media literacy through exposure to English texts.
• To improve communicative skills of English through reading and writing exercises.
