概要 Description
(The Railroad in American Art: Representations of Technological Change. Edited by Susan Danly and Leo Marx 所収)。 In this course, students will read and discuss articles written in English that examine American landscape painting from multiple perspectives, including historical, social, environmental, literary, and cultural backgrounds. The 19th and 20th centuries in the United States were a period of significant change in natural science and technology. In the landscapes painted during this period, various meanings (historical, social, literary, and cultural footprints) can be found in the details. Each paper presents a kind of riddle about a single painting. The Railroad in American Art: Representations of Technological Change (Ed. Susan Danly and Leo Marx). In today's fragmented disciplinary landscape, there is an increasing need for interdisciplinary perspectives that span multiple fields. This course aims to help students recognize that seemingly unrelated fields are interrelated and cultivate intellectual flexibility and a broad perspective in their fields of specialization. The class procedure begins with a discussion of the meaning of "looking at a picture" and a review of the main points of the article. Then, we will share students' points of interest and connect them to related fields to deepen cross-cultural understanding in a multilayered, multifaceted way. This course is designed to provide students with "communication skills and internationality (the ability to understand different cultures, languages, ethnicities, and international issues)," as stipulated by the University's Liberal Arts Education Policy.
The purpose of this course is based on the accurate reading of English articles and has the following three objectives (1) To deepen understanding of American literature and culture (2) To share other students' different points of view and clarify one's point of view through discussion. (3) To find perspectives that connect aspects of different cultures and eras to the present in the 21st century. Through (1) (2), and (3), we aim to nurture your creative thinking skills.
