概要 Description
This class will help students improve their English speaking and listening skills. While all of the four skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing – will come into play throughout the class, particular emphasis is placed on practical conversation skills combined with activities related to the topic of intercultural communication.
目的 Objectives
Students will learn to read for general meaning and detail with a high level of independence. They will increase usable vocabulary, learn to think more critically, and practice writing for clarity on a variety of topics. By the end of the class students should have an increased grasp of the many aspects of intercultural communication.
Another component of this class is English speaking practice. In each class students will have multiple opportunities to practice speaking English in pairs and in groups. This will build speaking fluency, allow students to notice their conversational English deficits, and allow them a window into the vocabulary that they are lacking. With this information students will be able to study independently the material relevant to their needs. Students will also have opportunities to present to the class, and in this way will hone their English public speaking skills. In addition to the above objectives, we will work to develop students’ communicative abilities in English. We will also address important aspects of culture, such as the various values at play, as we work towards cultivating more nuanced global perspectives. 到達目標 Outcomes
By the end of the class students will have a wider English vocabulary, be better at expressing themselves both orally and in writing, and will have a better understanding cross cultural communication.
Students should be able to use speaking strategies to continue conversations naturally and affectively. The culmination of the course should also see students with an increased vocabulary, a better awareness of proper pronunciation, and a level of autonomy that allows them to continue their English studies in the future. 卒業認定・学位授与の方針との関係(学部科目のみ)

成績評価方法 Performance grading policy
TOEIC-IP: 30%
Points for classwork (class assignments): 70% The assignments will come from the textbook for the class. There are a variety of assignments, including reading comprehension tasks, practice in applying the critical thinking techniques we cover, short answer tasks, and tasks that call for open ended and creative responses to problems. In short, the assignments will allow students to explore, and practice, thinking critically in English. Except for the 1st class, each class students will be able to earn 5 class points. In the 1st class there will be no points given. We will cover the syllabus in the 1st class. Class points will be given starting in the 2nd class. There are 15 classes total (1 introductory class, and 14 regular classes). (14 regular classes x 5 class points = 70 class points total for the semester) To earn their 5 classroom points students have to submit their completed assignments on time. Assignments must demonstrate a satisfactory level of understanding, engagement, and effort. Assignment must also be submitted in accordance with the instructions set out by the instructor. (5 class points × 14 classes = 70 classroom points) The 70 class points + the student's TOEIC-IP score = 100 points. Any student who has 4 or more unexcused absences within a semester cannot pass the class, and will not receive credit. Two delays [within 20 minutes] add up to one absence. If you have an official reason to be absent, you need to submit a document. 学修成果の評価 Evaluation of academic achievement
