概要 Description
このクラスは基本対面授業で行います。オンライン授業 (非同期) Online (asynchronized remote)になる場合もありますので、最新情報やアップデートを定期的にご確認ださい。
先生が学会で不在になる場合、授業をon-demandにします。 下記の大切な情報を必ずよく読んでください。 Information about how to participate in the class will be up on LETUS. Slides used in class, as well as other relevant materials (audio etc.) will also be uploaded onto LETUS on an ad hoc basis. There will be a weekly class each week in the classroom. Information on what students need to prepare each week will be up on LETUS. Remember to check LETUS often for updates on homework, assignments (such as presentation), and up-and-coming quizzes, or other important matters. The regular syllabus has been posted below - please refer to it before coming to class each week to familiarise yourself with the course schedule. In this class, we will read a chapter about the history of science very week, listen to short lectures and have discussions about simple science-related academic topics. Many of these discussions will be in pairs and groups of three (depending on the number of students in the class). Studying key words and vocabulary is also important. Students must take careful notes of all vocabulary items and be able to explain the meaning of key scientific words in English. Supplementary materials (補足教材) will also be provided at times, to help students better understand lesson content, and to help them prepare for their presentations. As participation accounts for a significant part of assessment, students are expected to conduct discussions in ENGLISH only. Students who switch to Japanese, during activities, too frequently will be penalised on participation points. (NOTE: Some instructions on how to complete activities may be given in Japanese). 目的 Objectives
The main goals of this class are to improve listening, communication and basic speaking skills.
Secondary goals are for students to develop sound presentation skills and gain a basic understanding of key moments in science history and major scientists throughout human history and the impact they have had on the world. A final goal is to learn about recent science-based topics in English that may be of future interest for one's research. 到達目標 Outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be better able to:
- comprehend naturally spoken English (both academic and non-academic) - read science-related passages with a better understanding of scientific vocabulary - discuss easy academic topics related to the sciences - give simple presentations about easy academic topics - develop self-study plans to improve their English - know how to take notes effectively and efficiently when listening to lectures - come away from the course with improved (academic and general) English reading skills 卒業認定・学位授与の方針との関係(学部科目のみ)

Students will need pens and pencils and paper on which to write down or take notes.
Bringing a ruled exercise book (notebook) to class would preferable. Students may alternatively write down notes on a laptop / notebook computer or iPad or similar device. (Students should have a sound knowledge of using Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Students will need to use PowerPoint or a similar platform to make a presentation in L12 or L13). A dictionary (paper or electronic) may also be useful but is not essential. Students will need to take notes during the class. Students MUST also purchase the course textbook and bring it to every class. It is essential for students to complete the weekly assigned reading task for homework and the textbook will also help students review class content and prepare for the end-of-term examinations. アクティブ・ラーニング科目 Teaching type(Active Learning)
小テストの実施 Quiz type test/ディベート・ディスカッション Debate/Discussion/グループワーク Group work/プレゼンテーション Presentation/PBL (課題解決型学習) Problem-based learning/-
・In this class students will focus on conducting short pair or small-group discussions on the course topics.
・Students will also practice taking notes every week (listening activities). ・In Lesson 12 or 13, students will have the opportunity to give a presentation in front of the class in groups. ・Sometimes students will be given more challenging problem-based / task-based learning exercises. 準備学習・復習 Preparation and review
Students will be expected to....
1) read one chapter of the textbook every week (in order to be prepared for each week's lecture, discussions and quizzes held fortnightly); 2) review basic textbook content and supplementary handout content covered week-to-week in class; 2) complete HW activities where appropriate (not every week) (Note: the final slides of each week's slide deck will list the required HW tasks) 3) review key vocabulary to facilitate learning of course content and to improve one's reading, listening, speaking and writing skills 4) speak in ENGLISH when conducting classroom discussions or activities 5) contact classmates when preparing for group presentations 6) contact the teacher directly (via email) when unclear on any tasks or to consult them on other matters (attendance etc.) in ENGLISH using correct email etiquette. 成績評価方法 Performance grading policy
Grades will be calculated as follows:
25% Group presentations (to be conducted in lesson 8 or 13 (but students will be assessed individually) 25% In-class quizzes (conducted basically every 2 weeks) (5 quizzes x 10 pts. each / 2) (Each quiz is 5%) 30% Final Test (conducted in Lesson 14 or 15) 20% In-class participation 学修成果の評価 Evaluation of academic achievement

When preparing your group presentation, feel free to consult your teacher on materials you should investigate or read to help you be well prepared. (NOTE: Students will be encouraged to choose ONE chapter from the textbook not covered in class as their presentation topic). At the end of the class you should be able to: - feel more comfortable using English; - maintain simple discussions on science-related topics; - have a basic understanding of scientific and some academic English words and phrases; - know how to give a presentation in English; - have a basic understanding of key scientific and social issues throughout history and in the world today - emerge with a stronger ability in reading English (through extensive reading outside of class time) - emerge with a stronger ability in listening to English (especially in relation to science) - emerge with a stronger ability in speaking English (especially on topics related to science) 授業でのBYOD PCの利用有無 Whether or not students may use BYOD PCs in class
