概要 Description
Academic English 2: Discussion and Debate

In this course, students will engage in regular small-group discussions in English on topics related to current affairs and recent developments in Japan and across the world. Students will read recent news and opinion articles selected from the English-language media on themes ranging from science and technology to topics in culture, sociology, politics and economics. Students will also learn how to effectively formulate and express viewpoints on consequential and contentious issues and to actively engage in constructive debate.
目的 Objectives
There are two broad objectives to the course. The first is to improve students’ ability to express their ideas and opinions in spoken English. Students will be given ample opportunity to practise speaking in class, which will help them to develop the necessary fluency and confidence to engage in meaningful discussion and debate on a variety of topics. The second aim of the course is to further reinforce in students the habits of sound academic practice, including evidence-based argumentation, clear logical reasoning, critical thinking and the ability to look at complex issues from different angles.
到達目標 Outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
  • express their ideas on complex topics more accurately and confidently in English
  • construct coherent and persuasive arguments based on evidence and clear reasoning
  • critically analyse claims and evidence presented to them and formulate effective questions to challenge flawed argumentation
  • effectively defend their arguments against unreasonable critique
  • participate effectively and with confidence in formal debating activities in English
  • contribute more productively to seminar discussions

備考 Remarks
As group discussion activities constitute a major component of the course, students are expected to attend class sessions regularly. As far as possible, students should notify the instructor in advance by email when they will miss a class, and may be failed due to bad attendance if they are absent from more than five classes in one semester. Students who arrive more than five minutes late for a class will be marked absent.
