概要 Description
This is a second-year course that will build on the listening and communication skills of L&S Ia & b, but with more science and technology-oriented themes and topics. You should be able to:
- learn to listen and comprehend naturally spoken English
- practice discussing scientific and technological topics
- practice giving simple presentations based on our discussions from the themes
Vocabulary is also important. We must take careful notes of all vocabulary items and be able to explain the meaning of simple words in English.

There is no textbook for this class. The course content will be up on LETUS each week. So you have to access and check LETUS each week. We will also use LETUS to upload any homework and assignments and to grade your presentations.
目的 Objectives
Over the semester, we will aim to:
-discuss topics based on the scientific and technological themes of the course that we can and build our knowledge through such discussions
-prepare and deliver short presentations on topics related to the themes
-comprehend naturally spoken English
-summarize academic topics, issues, and arguments
-compare and contrast varying topics, issues, and arguments
-review texts and some listening material to understand opinions and arguments more critically

到達目標 Outcomes
Over the semester, we will aim to be able to:
-continue discussing topics that we can and build our knowledge through such discussions
-continue to prepare and deliver presentations on topics related to the discussion themes

準備学習・復習 Preparation and review
Instructions for preparation and review will be given in each class. While I will keep homework to a minimum, you should be ready to try out your discussion in English in classes. 1-2 hours for review of theme and topic content will help you to prepare for the classes.

成績評価方法 Performance grading policy
Active class participation: 20%
Mini-presentations 1-4: 20% average
Mid-term presentation: 30%
Final presentation: 30%

About feedback for presentations
It will be difficult for me to give individual comments to you for the mid-term and final presentations because of the size of the classes. Therefore, before your presentations, I will give a detailed guide in Japanese and English in a presentation rubric that will give you an idea of what to prepare for and what your goal should be when you present.

After the presentations, I will give generalized comments on things I see and hear in the presentations for quality of the content, the speaking, and connection with those you will present to (such as in eye contact, generation of interest in your topic, and Q&A after the presentations). I will also give suggestions and tips on how presentation preparation quality and speaking can be improved wherever I have seen and heard things that need improvement. (I will not name individual students for any errors or anything else lacking in presentation work).
