概要 Description
Freshman English 1 is a one-semester class designed for first-year students. Its aim is to prepare you for further studies at university and lay a foundation for the use of English in the future, at work and in research. This will be achieved by revising the basic grammar and vocabulary you learned at school and using this in more practical situations.
目的 Objectives
This class moves away from a formal type of teacher-centered English learning. It moves towards your taking control and beginning to improve your ability to talk about various topics connected with social issues.
到達目標 Outcomes
You will
1) become comfortable with taking risks in your communication in English.
2) explain your opinions using specific examples and reasons about a topic before reading about or listening to it.
3) become able to write medium-length paragraphs.
4) clarify your partner’s meaning and gain further details.
5) paraphrase what you want to say using other words so that your partner will understand you.

This class is devised to help provide the following:
To broaden an outlook on Nature/Human Beings/Society
To think logically and critically
To communicate ideas
To develop a sense of Internationalization (cross-cultural communication/knowledge of foreign languages/knowledge of other peoples/knowledge of International Affairs)

準備学習・復習 Preparation and review

Participation is essential; attending every class is required. A large part of the grade will be based on participation during class. Doing your homework outside of class to prepare and review will be required to maximize in-class participation.

The homework grade will be calculated based on the preparation you do outside of class, either individually or with your classmates, such as preparing for group presentations for each unit. The homework will consist of doing the exercises in the textbook, preparing for presentations, and using Duolingo to develop your English proficiency.

There will be a midterm test and a final test if you are taking the class all year.

There may also be other quizzes as well if the teacher deems necessary.

成績評価方法 Performance grading policy

Grades will be calculated as follows:

33% Participation - This is a speaking and listening class, so you must be present and you must actively participate in class

33% Tests and Quizzes - There will be multiple quizzes as well as an in-class midterm and final test

34% Homework - This includes work done in the textbook as well as through online learning using Duolingo
