概要 Description
Language and Culture: Sustainability of Linguistic Diversity
We all use some form of language to communicate in our daily lives, and many of us may take the concept of ‘language’ for granted. However, language has had a significant impact on society and has been shaped by various changes in society throughout its long history. In this course, we will explore the connections between language and society through the theme of ‘sustainable diversity’. How did the concept of a ‘standard language’ come about? Starting from this seemingly simple question, we will examine the role of language in the increasingly diverse society in which we live.

Class plan
Week 1: Introduction
We will discuss the course overview and introduce ourselves, sharing our interests in languages and cultures. Week 2: History of the Standard Language (1) We will discuss the historical development of the concept of a ‘standard language’ and the factors that contributed to its emergence. To begin, we will go back to fifteenth-century Italy, when people fiercely debated whose language would become the ‘standard’. Week 3: History of the Standard Language (2) We will continue our discussion of the history of language standardisation, examining further examples and exchanging our ideas about what constitutes a ‘good’ language. Week 4: Linguistic Diversity (1) We will explore the diversity of the world’s languages, as well as the benefits and challenges associated with it. The session will begin with a short exercise to identify languages around the world. Week 5: Linguistic Diversity (2) We will continue our discussion of linguistic diversity through additional examples and case studies, and exchange ideas about how it can be sustained. We will also explore the question: Can linguistic diversity be compared to ecological diversity? Week 6: Languages in Danger (1) We will examine languages at risk of extinction and how they are perceived in local communities. The session will begin with a short exercise linking languages to countries - some languages may not be the most typical for a country. Week 7: Languages in Danger (2) We will continue our discussion of endangered languages, examining additional case studies and reflecting on the needs and strategies for their preservation and revitalisation. Week 8: Mid-Term Roundtable Students will discuss the class content they found particularly interesting in a roundtable format. They can share personal thoughts, anecdotes, photos, or videos related to the class topics, and provide comments on each other’s contributions. This session can also be used to go over anything that students have found difficult to understand so far. Week 9: Language Contact (1) We will examine different forms of language contact and discuss how languages influence one another. The session will begin with a short game in which students guess the meaning of sentences in some “hybrid” languages. Week 10: Group Work for Final Presentations We will begin preparing for final presentations. Please choose your topic for the final presentation by this date. Week 11: Language Contact (2) We will continue our discussion of language contact with additional examples, reflecting on its causes and effects. Week 12: Presentations and Discussions (1) Students will give a presentation on a theme of their choice, based on content covered in class, followed by a Q&A session and group discussion. Week 13: Presentations and Discussions (2) Students will give a presentation on a theme of their choice, based on content covered in class, followed by a Q&A session and group discussion. Week 14: Presentations and Discussions (3) Students will give a presentation on a theme of their choice, based on content covered in class, followed by a Q&A session and group discussion. Week 15: Feedback We will reflect on our overall achievements during the semester and give feedback to each other. SBOsコード(薬学部薬学科のみ 2023年度以前カリキュラム適用者対象)
