This course aims to enhance students’ communication skills in English, with a focus on reading and writing. Students will learn to comprehend academic texts and read for gist (general understanding) and factual details. They will learn skills to improve their academic paragraph writing for essays in English. The course aims to increase students' academic vocabulary for a range of topics.

Active participation in class and interaction with peers in English are expected.

This course is aimed at increasing students' academic reading and writing skills. Students should be able to:
- improve their ability to read texts on academic topics,
- enhance their ability to plan and write academic paragraphs and essays in English,
- expand their academic vocabulary.

At the end of the course, students should be better able to:
- comprehend academic texts written in English,
- plan and write appropriate academic style paragraphs in English,
- produce a short appropriate academic style essay in English,
- understand and use some Academic English terms introduced in the course.

Students are expected to:
- review the course materials after each lesson,
- engage in homework,
- prepare for the reading/vocabulary quizzes,
- prepare for the final essay,
- actively participate in pair and group discussions in class.

Active Class Participation: 30%
Final Essay: 20%
Reading/Vocabulary Quizzes: 30%
Homework and Online Activities: 20%

Students require a minimum score of 60% on the Final Essay AND an overall grade of 60% to pass.
The instructor reserves the right to deduct points from the final grade due to failure to complete homework or lack of participation in class activities or group discussions.
