概要 Description
Freshman English 1 is a one-semester class designed for first-year students. Its aim is to prepare you for further studies at university and lay a foundation for the use of English in the future, at work and in research. This will be achieved by revising the basic grammar and vocabulary you learned at school and using this in more practical situations.
目的 Objectives
This class moves away from a formal type of teacher-centered English learning. It moves towards your taking control and beginning to improve your ability to talk about various topics connected with social issues.
到達目標 Outcomes
You will
1) become comfortable with taking risks in your communication in English.
2) explain your opinions using specific examples and reasons about a topic before reading about or listening to it.
3) become able to write medium-length paragraphs.
4) clarify your partner’s meaning and gain further details.
5) paraphrase what you want to say using other words so that your partner will understand you.

This class is devised to help provide the following:
To broaden an outlook on Nature/Human Beings/Society
To think logically and critically
To communicate ideas
To develop a sense of Internationalization (cross-cultural communication/knowledge of foreign languages/knowledge of other peoples/knowledge of International Affairs)

成績評価方法 Performance grading policy
Assessment: 30%
Points for classwork (class assignments): 70%

The assignments will come from the textbook for the class. There are a variety of assignments, including reading comprehension tasks, practice in applying the critical thinking techniques we cover, short answer tasks, and tasks that call for open ended and creative responses to problems. In short, the assignments will allow students to explore, and practice, thinking critically in English.

Except for the last class, each class students will be able to earn 5 class points.
In the last class there will be an assessment worth 30 points.

There are 15 classes total: 14 regular classes, and 1 test class (which will be the last class).

(14 regular classes x 5 class points = 70 class points total for the semester)

To earn their 5 classroom points students have to submit their completed assignments on time. Assignments must demonstrate a satisfactory level of understanding, engagement, and effort. Assignment must also be submitted in accordance with the instructions set out by the instructor. (5 class points × 14 classes = 70 classroom points)

The 70 class points + 30 assessment points = 100 points.

Any student who has 4 or more unexcused absences within a semester cannot pass the class, and will not receive credit.
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->
Two delays [within 20 minutes] add up to one absence. If you have an official reason to be absent, you need to submit a document.
