概要 Description
Listening & Speaking is a one-semester course for second-year students. This course develops advanced listening and speaking fluency through active learning and real-world tasks using Pathways 3 (3rd Edition). In this semester, students will explore topics connected to design, environmental action, medicine, history, and psychology through Unit 6 Design with Purpose, Unit 7 Inspired to Act, Unit 8 Traditional and Modern Medicine, Unit 9 Uncovering the Past, and Unit 10 Feelings & Emotions. Through structured listening cycles, vocabulary building, discussion training, short speaking tasks, and a final research-based group presentation, students will improve clarity, confidence, and communication skills for academic and real-world settings.
目的 Objectives
Classes are taught in English and follow an active learning format. Each lesson includes warm-up speaking, vocabulary preparation, a listening cycle (gist and details), and discussion tasks with clear roles. Students work individually, in pairs, and in groups. Fluency activities (timed speaking, follow-up questions, clarification strategies, paraphrasing, and opinion support) are practiced regularly. A quiz is given in Week 11, followed by two research and presentation workshop sessions in Weeks 12 and 13, final presentations in Week 14, and course wrap-up in Week 15. Listening Logs are assigned every other week. For each Listening Log, students will listen to an assigned video or audio and submit two short paragraphs: (1) a summary paragraph (main ideas and key details) and (2) a reaction paragraph (personal opinion, connection to society, or one question).

CEFR Target: Aiming for CEFR level B2. Speaking “Can Do” descriptor: can give clear, systematically developed descriptions and presentations, with appropriate highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting details. Listening “Can Do” descriptor: can understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar.
到達目標 Outcomes
By the end of the semester, students will be able to:
  1. understand main ideas, key details, and speaker viewpoints in extended spoken English,
  2. discuss social and academic topics with clear reasons, examples, and comparisons,
  3. use note-taking, paraphrasing, and clarification strategies during listening and discussion tasks,
  4. use academic vocabulary and clearer pronunciation to communicate more effectively,
  5. collaborate on research and deliver a well-organized group presentation.

    • An absence counts as 1 strike.
    • An accumulation of 4 total strikes during the semester results in automatic failure of the course.
