概要 Description
This course is aimed at a cross-section of students from engineering, information technology, and other STEM majors. It is designed to help such students develop greater confidence and competence in reading, discussing, and presenting themes and topics in English that relate to their areas of study. There is no textbook. Instead, all material will be on LETUS. Classes are conducted in English only and meet once a week for 90 minutes each. Regular attendance, punctuality, and completion of all assignments will be extremely important for success.
目的 Objectives
In this course, we will develop reading and discussion with STEM-oriented material on issues and situations that are common in our background and understanding towards future work and/or research in our fields.
到達目標 Outcomes
Using reading material on STEM themes and topics, students will read and discuss the themes and topics towards carrying out presentations on such themes and topics.

20% Mini-group or pair presentations 1 & 2 (on average)
30% Mid-term group or pair presentation
30% Final group or pair presentation

About feedback for presentations
It will be difficult for me to give individual comments to you for the mid-term and final presentations because of the size of the classes. Therefore, before your presentations, I will give a detailed guide in Japanese and English in a presentation rubric that will give you an idea of what to prepare for and what your goal should be when you present.

After the presentations, I will give generalized comments on things I see and hear in the presentations for quality of the content, the speaking, and connection with those you will present to (such as eye contact, generation of interest in your topic, and Q&A after the presentations). I will also give suggestions and tips on how presentation preparation quality and speaking can be improved wherever I have seen and heard things that need improvement. (I will not name individual students for any errors or anything else lacking in presentation work.)
