概要 Description
Your objective for studying in engineering course is to learn expertized knowledge in each area and to experience excitement of creating something new from inventions and new discoveries through your research activities. Learning knowledge and experiencing research activities will develop your significant base for creating “innovation” for sure, which has been encouraged by universities, enterprises or governments. Then, what is the difference between “innovation” and “invention/discovery”, which are both generated from creative activities? Key difference is that innovation would lead company’s growth and economy growth by bringing new values into our life, and it would influence creation of better society and restructuring of industries. Therefore, true value of “invention/discovery” would be evaluated by measuring how these could contribute to “innovation”. When you choose a research topic for your thesis, when you choose a job area, or when you choose a company to work for, it would be a big help for you to have perspective seeing things with questions like “How is this topic/job area/company contributing to innovation in our society?”, “How could this topic/job area/company create a new innovation in future?”. In this course, you will learn the well-known and need-to-know innovation theory, which had been developed by analyzing rise and fall of leading companies and industries by Clayton Christensen. This course proceeds by interactive way including group discussions. In the first half of this course, you will learn “Sustaining innovation and Disruptive innovation” which is the core of Christensen’s Innovation theory. In the second half, we focus on Discovery Skills to find a seed for creating innovation through a field work as well as lectures. The expected target of this course is that you, who would involve in engineering as a researcher/engineer/entrepreneur, will understand “Essence of innovation” through Christensen’s theory, and will learn about skills required for becoming an innovator through your own activities. Furthermore, the lecturer wants to proceed this course by sharing his experiences of working for global companies of Japan, Europe and US: Ricoh Corp., Nokia, and Intel as a R&D engineer, R&D manager/laboratory director and public policy director. 目的 Objectives

In addition, the lecturer basically spends time for recap of the last lecture at the beginning of each lecture. The material for you to utilize at each lecture will be uploaded to LETUS. Performance grading policy
Grading is based on your report submission and the quality of each report. In addition, your contribution to group discussion and interactivity during the lecture and your contribution to the group fieldwork would be taken into account. Regarding reports, in addition to including contents based on your learning from the lecture, you are expected to show any unique idea/thought from your own perspective. Note: Reports shall be written in English. Evaluation of academic achievement
