概要　Description
This course gives students the opportunity to learn English vocabulary, improve their English grammar, read English material, practise writing, and prepare for the TOEIC exam and reflect on successful study strategies. Instructions and explanations will be given in English. Students are expected to use English at all times.  
Classes will follow the following pattern:
1/ Vocabulary and grammar test (10 minutes)
2/ Homework check
3/ Reading activities
4/ Homework and assignment announcements
5/ Exit tickets (this activity will be explained in class) 
目的　Objectives

The main aim of this course is to improve student’s reading and writing skills as well as their vocabulary and grammar accuracy. 
到達目標　Outcomes

Can-do statements:
  • Can understand short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type which consist of high frequency everyday or job-related language. 
  • Can understand short, simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary, including a proportion of shared international vocabulary items. 
  • Can identify specific information in simpler written material he/she encounters such as letters, brochures and short newspaper articles describing events. 
  • Can write very brief reports to a standard conventionalised format, which present routine factual information and state reasons for actions. 
  • Can write a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with simple connectors like ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘because’.

At of this course, students should be able to :  
  • understand phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance (READING) 
  • catch the main point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements (READING)  
  • write short paragraphs about familiar topics. (WRITING)

履修上の注意　Course notes prerequisites
1. 遅刻は授業開始20分まで
2. 遅刻2回で欠席1回
3. 20分以上遅れた場合は欠席
4. 4回以上欠席すると単位取得できない。ただし、特別な理由がある場合は必ず相談してください。

1. Students are expected to participate in class activities and roleplays.
2. Students are expected to use English at all times.
3. Students will automatically fail once they have missed   FOUR (4) lessons.
4. Arriving late (within 20 minutes) TWICE (2) equals ONE (1) absence.
5. Arriving late (21 minutes and more) ONCE (1) equals ONE (1) absence.
6. Absences can only be excused when filed with an official document.

Students MUST bring pens to class.
They may take their laptops or tablets.
The use of smartphones is not permitted in class.

In line with the recommendations from the Ministry of Education (MEXT) students are expected to study 4 hours outside class time
  • 2 hours for TOEIC preparation (textbook or mobile applications) 
  • 1 hour for vocabulary memorisation and/or application (mobile application)  
  • 1 hour for homework (grammar textbook)

  • 30% Vocabulary tests (小テスト) 
  • 10% Weekly Reflections (pass or fail) 
  • 20% Homework 
  • 10% Final exam (TOEIC mock exam reading + grammar)
