概要 Description
This is a first-year listening & speaking course designed around discussion, short presentations, and a final presentation on topics related to the textbook themes. 目的 Objectives
The main objectives of this class are to improve listening and communication skills. You should be able to: - learn to listen and comprehend naturally spoken English - practice discussing easy academic topics focused on the social and hard sciences - practice giving simple presentations based on our discussions from the textbook themes Vocabulary is also important. We must take careful notes of all vocabulary items and be able to explain the meaning of simple words in English. 到達目標 Outcomes
Over the semester, we will aim to: -discuss textbook topics that we can and build our knowledge through such discussions -prepare and deliver short presentations on topics related to the textbook themes While we will use a textbook in this class, some content will be up on LETUS, the TUS learning management system (LMS) each week. So you have to check LETUS each week as well, even if you miss class. I will keep homework to a minimum, but we will use LETUS to upload any homework we have, plus assignments, and to grade your presentations. 卒業認定・学位授与の方針との関係(学部科目のみ)

準備学習・復習 Preparation and review
Instructions for preparation and review will be given in each class. While I will keep homework to a minimum, you should be ready to try out your discussion in English in classes. 1-2 hours for review of theme and topic content will help you to prepare for the classes. 成績評価方法 Performance grading policy
Active class participation: 20% Mini-presentations 1-4: 20% average Mid-term presentation: 30% Final presentation: 30% About feedback for presentations It will be difficult for me to give individual comments to you for the mid-term and final presentations because of the size of the classes. Therefore, before your presentations, I will give a detailed guide in Japanese and English in a presentation rubric that will give you an idea of what to prepare for and what your goal should be when you present. After the presentations, I will give generalized comments on things I see and hear in the presentations for quality of the content, the speaking, and connection with those you will present to (such as in eye contact, generation of interest in your topic, and Q&A after the presentations). I will also give suggestions and tips on how presentation preparation quality and speaking can be improved wherever I have seen and heard things that need improvement. (I will not name individual students for any errors or anything else lacking in presentation work). 学修成果の評価 Evaluation of academic achievement
