概要 Description

In recent years, computational science has played an increasingly important role in materials science and engineering, particularly in the exploration of new materials and the elucidation of the origins of material properties. Nowadays, experimental researchers are now frequently required to perform first-principles calculations.
This course consists of two main parts: in the first half of the course, fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics will be reviewed, followed by a systematic discussion of the physical insights that can be obtained from solutions of the Schrödinger equation. After introducing the basic theoretical framework required for ab initio calculations, namely, theoretical calculations that do not rely on empirical parameters, students will perform simple practical calculations of electronic and vibrational energy levels of molecules using Python-based quantum chemistry modules such as PySCF and WEB-based Molcalc. In the second half of the course, theoretical concepts applicable to both molecules and solids are introduced. Covalent bonding will be first explained through the secular equation, and students will learn, using mathematical expressions, how covalent and ionic bonding coexist in chemical bonds. By combining theoretical background with practical computational results, students will gain an understanding of chemical trends governing the physical properties of molecules and solids.

目的 Objectives

The material stipulated in the curriculum and diploma policy of the department, "Beyond the existing framework of engineering, we will integrate and develop basic science with free ideas and create new materials and new engineering that contribute to the development of industry." In line with the educational purpose of "cultivating creative human resources who contribute to society based on the specialty of materials engineering", which is based on the philosophy of material engineering, the objectives of this course are:
  • To acquire a broad understanding of the fundamental theories underlying first-principles calculations
  • To understand what essential physical insights can be extracted from computational results
  • To develop the ability to predict trends in the physical properties of molecules and solids
Through deductive reasoning, students will experience the intellectual satisfaction of understanding how specific material properties emerge from particular combinations and arrangements of elements.

 内容:WEBベースで公開されているMolcalc(公開ソフトウェアGAMESSを用いているもので、基底はSTO-3G)を用いて、電子エネルギー準位、電子の波動関数、振動準位を計算する。
