概要 Description

Students will learn about the energy band theory, essential for understanding solid state physics, and its application to the basics of semiconductor physics.
目的 Objectives

Based on Sections 1, 2, and 5 of the Curriculum Policy, this is an elective course designed to deepen specialized knowledge and cultivate the ability to identify and solve problems from an interdisciplinary perspective. This course contributes to the realization of the Diploma Policy.

The objective is to acquire foundational knowledge of the electrical and optical properties of solids by studying quantum mechanics and the energy band theory based on it.
Outcomes

  1. Students will gain an understanding of quantum mechanics and perturbation theory, which are essential for comprehending the electronic and optical properties of solids.
  2. Students will learn about Bloch's theorem, which governs the behavior of electrons in a periodic potential, and the solid-state energy band theory derived from this theorem.
  3. Students will become familiar with practical energy band calculation methods developed from the above concepts, including the pseudopotential method and first-principles calculations.
  4. As an application of band theory, students will understand the fundamental properties of solids, such as electrical conduction and optical characteristics including semiconductors.

Preparation and review

  • The course will proceed under the assumption that students understand the standard quantum mechanics presented in textbooks. Students should prepare in advance and ensure they understand any unclear sections before class.
  • It is assumed that students have fully grasped the content of "Solid State Physics I" throughout the course. Review of "Solid State Physics I" should be conducted.
  • Exercise problems given during the class should be completed reliably.
(Preparatory Study) Review the relevant sections in textbooks and reference books. (Approximately 2 hours)
(Review) Learn the solutions to the exercise problems presented during the class. (Approximately 2 hours)
