概要 Description

Strength of materials is one of the most important and fundamental subjects in mechanical engineering, as the knowledge acquired in this field is essential for determining the dimensions and materials of components in mechanical design.

目的 Objectives

In this course, students will acquire fundamental knowledge of strength of materials. Specifically, complex-shaped components are idealized as bars and beams, and methods for calculating the stresses and elongations that occur in them are studied. In addition, simple mechanical structures are also examined. Through this course, students will develop a solid foundation in statics. This course is offered in accordance with the diploma policy of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, which aims to cultivate the fundamental academic ability and engineering sense required to respond to cutting-edge science and technology.

備考 Remarks

In this course, students will learn how to solve problems involving tension and compression of bars, bending of beams, and torsion of bars. Although these problems may at first appear to be of different types, by attending this course you will realize that they can all be treated concisely using a single, simple solution procedure. In particular, the “step-by-step solution method” explained in every lecture was specifically developed for this course. Through this approach, students will build a strong foundation in mechanics. While the concepts may be challenging to grasp at the beginning, repeated practice will gradually make the way of thinking more familiar and intuitive.
