概要 Description
This class will help students improve their English speaking and listening skills. While all of the four skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing – will come into play throughout the class, particular emphasis is placed on practical conversation skills.
目的 Objectives
Students will learn to listen for general meaning and detail with a high level of independence. They will increase usable vocabulary, learn to think more critically, and practice listening and speaking about variety of topics. By the end of the class students should be able to discuss a variety of topics related to their daily lives.

Another component of this class is English speaking practice. In each class students will have multiple opportunities to practice speaking English in pairs and in groups. This will build speaking fluency, allow students to notice their conversational English deficits, and allow them a window into the vocabulary that they are lacking. With this information students will be able to study independently the material relevant to their needs.

Students will also have opportunities to present to the class, and in this way will hone their English public speaking skills.

By the end of the class students will be better English speakers. Their English vocabulary will have increased, they will be able to ask more grammatically accurate questions, and they will be able to employ useful speaking strategies. Students will also gain practical presentation skills.
In addition to the above objectives, we will work to develop students’ communicative abilities in English. We will also address important aspects of culture, such as the various values at play, as we work towards cultivating more nuanced global perspectives.
到達目標 Outcomes
By the end of the class students will have a wider English vocabulary, be better at expressing themselves both orally and in writing, and will have a better understanding of how to think more critically.

Students should be able to use speaking strategies to continue conversations naturally and affectively. The culmination of the course should also see students with an increased vocabulary, a better awareness of proper pronunciation, and a level of autonomy that allows them to continue their English studies in the future.

Students should also be able to present a satisfactory presentation.

アクティブ・ラーニング科目 Teaching type(Active Learning)
ディベート・ディスカッション Debate/Discussion/グループワーク Group work/プレゼンテーション Presentation
1. Students will practice listening and speaking skills related to topics related to their lives.
2. Students should come to class prepared to talk with their partners and group members.
3. The partners / groups will change each week, so students have a chance to talk with a wide variety of classmates.

準備学習・復習 Preparation and review
Students should complete assignments, submit them on time, and review the material in preparation for each class. Students are expected to learn the necessary vocabulary, retain the information covered in the readings, and adequately and fully complete the assignments.
成績評価方法 Performance grading policy
TOEIC: 33%
Presentation: 17%
Points for classwork: 50%

The assignments will come from the textbook for the class. There are a variety of speaking and listening activities that we will do throughout the semester.

Except for the 1st class and the prestation class, students will be able to earn 3.85 class points per class.
In the 1st class there will be no points given. We will cover the syllabus in the 1st class.
In the presentation class students will give their presentations, which is 17% of the final grade.
Class points will be given starting in the 2nd class.
There are 15 classes total (1 introductory class, 1 presentation class, and 13 regular classes).
(13 regular classes x 3.85 class points = 50 class points total for the semester)

To earn their 3.85 classroom points students must complete the activities at a satisfactory level of understanding, engagement, and effort. (3.85 class points × 13 classes = 50 classroom points / 50% of the grade)

The 50 class points (50%) + the student's TOEIC-IP score (33%) + Presentations (17%) = 100 points (100%).

Any student who has 5 or more unexcused absences within a semester cannot pass the class, and will not receive credit.
Two delays [within 20 minutes] add up to one absence. If you have an official reason to be absent, you need to submit a document.

Wendy M. Gough has a doctorate in education and has been teaching at Japanese universities for 20 years. She has experience using communicative teaching methods to build communities of learners in English classes. Learning communities help students gain confidence in their English skills because they have chances to learn with a wide variety of classmates, share ideas, and learn about other students' experiences that are similar or different than their own. Also, in learning communities, students work together to achieve a positive outcome. I hope you will enjoy learning listening and speaking skills as you collaborate with your classmates and make new friends in our classroom community.
