概要 Description
General Seminar: Cross-Cultural Communication in the Era of Diversity

This seminar provides a forum to discover, discuss, and reflect on key aspects of cross-cultural communication in contexts of growing social and linguistic diversity. With the expansion of digital media, internationally dominant languages play an increasingly central role in global interaction. The course addresses challenges in communicating in a foreign language, including common anxieties about making mistakes or causing misunderstandings, and considers the factors contributing to these difficulties and ways to overcome them. Students engage with these issues through interactive lectures, student-led discussions, roundtables, and presentations, moderated by the instructor, who has lived in multiple countries and used several languages.

Keywords: Sociolinguistics; cross-cultural communication; global language; World Englishes; multilingualism

Objectives
The course introduces students to the main concepts and issues surrounding cross-cultural communication, including global language, World Englishes, and Clear Language initiatives. Delivered through English-medium instruction (EMI), it provides opportunities to develop practical language skills while engaging with diverse cultural perspectives. Each session combines interactive lectures with class discussions to promote active participation and reflective learning.
Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will:
  • Acquire knowledge of concepts related to cross-cultural communication
  • Gain insights into cultural and linguistic diversity in contemporary contexts
  • Understand strategies and challenges in international interactions
  • Develop skills to communicate effectively, using their linguistic and cultural backgrounds as strengths
