概要 Description
This course is aimed at students who need to improve their English significantly in order to guarantee success in higher education for their academic studies and activities. It is an integrated skills course, which means that students will develop abilities in reading, writing, listening and speaking in an academic context. As students taking this course will be coming from various scientific disciplines, this course includes topics and texts that will be of interest to students from all subject areas and teaches language and skills that will be of use to students researching in all fields. However, some parts of the course will also help students develop abilities relevant to their particular area of study. This course is aimed at students who need to improve their English significantly in order to guarantee success in higher education.

Students should be willing to and interested in sharing their ongoing research with fellow class members, as well as be open to learning about their peers' different areas of study. This course will be taught entirely in English, with students expected to communicate with each other and the teacher in English, too. Therefore, students must have a strong working knowledge of English and be able to confidently make use of practical skills they already have. Students are expected to purchase the textbook. It is advised that students should already have between 550–780 in TOEIC in order to take this class comfortably, but this is not a requirement.

準備学習・復習 Preparation and review
Students should pay attention to LETUS before and after each lesson. After each lesson, class summaries, resources, and any homework assignments will be posted there. In addition, announcements from the teacher may be sent to student email accounts, too. At times, students may need to refer to LETUS in order to prepare for forthcoming classes.
成績評価方法 Performance grading policy
The final grade will be composed as follows:
Class Participation = Up to 30 points Self-directed activities = Up to 25 points Research Communication Assessments = Up to 45 points 学修成果の評価 Evaluation of academic achievement
S: To earn an S, a student must achieve a score of 90% or higher. This is considered an outstanding passing score.
A: To earn an A, a student must achieve a score of 80% or higher. This is considered an excellent passing score. B: To earn a B, a student must achieve a score of 70% or higher. This is considered a good passing score. C: To earn a C, a student must achieve a score of 60% or higher. This is considered a satisfactory passing score. Lesson 1: Orientation and introductions Lesson 2: Unit 1 - Researching for essay production, essay organisation, and introducing presentations Lesson 3: Unit 2 - Using claims in essays, presenting charts, and selecting information for essays Lesson 4: Unit 3 - Taking notes, making suggestions, and referring to other people's work Lesson 5: Unit 4 - Reporting and generating ideas, reporting information, and reading in detail Lesson 6: Unit 5 - Recognising plagiarism, reaching consensus, and paraphrasing Lesson 7: Units 1 to 5 review and assessment preparation Lesson 8: Academic communication assessment 1 - Performance Lesson 9: Unit 6 - Making references in presentations, writing conclusions, and essay organisation Lesson 10: Unit 7 - Reading critically, academic styles, and concluding presentations Lesson 11: Unit 8 - Understanding figures and tables, joining discussions, and structuring reports Lesson 12: Unit 9 - Understanding writers' opinions, asking for information, and describing data Lesson 13: Unit 10 - Reading for evidence, summarising, and contrasting information Lesson 14: Units 6 to 10 review and assessment preparation Lesson 15: Academic communication assessment 2 - Performance The ten units (lessons 2-6 & lessons 9-13) are organised around a broad topic of interest, helping you develop your skills in reading, speaking and writing academic English.
