概要 Description
This is a speaking and listening class for first-year students. The focus will be engaging in active communication, using several topics as a class and in small groups. Each topic assigned will include preparing material to share in class and participating in small group conversations. Active speaking and listening are essential for this class. You will also keep a daily journal of outside language work, which can describe experiences, thoughts, or opinions and must be in each student's original words.

For each topic, you must prepare paragraphs to present in class and submit by email. Topics and questions will be posted on LETUS. You will also keep a daily journal of outside language work, which I will check weekly.
成績評価方法 Performance grading policy
Active participation in class (listening, participating in group work): 20%
In Class Presentations: 40% Paragraphs submitted on time using the proper format: 20% Journals: 20% S: To earn an S, a student must: Have no more than one absence. Complete all assignments with a score of 90% or better (9 = S). Submit all paragraphs on time using the proper format. Follow class protocols for submitting work. Actively participate in group discussions using English. Keep a daily journal of outside language activity with excellent descriptive content. Consistently get 90% on journal content. Will not use AI to produce classwork, including translation apps. Demonstrate a willingness to do more than the bare minimum for an assignment (this means do a little extra - longer, more complex answers to questions. A: To earn an A, a student must: Have no more than two absences. Complete all assignments with an average score of 80% (8 = A). Submit all paragraphs on time using the proper format. Keep a daily journal of outside language activity with good descriptive content. Consistently get 80% on journal content. Will not use AI to produce classwork, including translation apps. Follow class protocols for submitting work. Demonstrate a willingness to do more than minimal work, including writing longer, most complex answers. Actively participate in groups using English. B: To earn a B, a student must: Have no more than three absences. Complete all assignments with an average score of 70% (7 - B). Submit 90% of all assignments (no more than one missing). Submit work on time following the proper format. Keep a daily journal of outside language activity with good descriptive content. Consistently get 70% on journal content. Will not use AI to produce classwork, including translation apps. Actively participate in groups using English. C: To earn a C, a student must: Have no more than five absences. Complete all assignments with an average score of 60% (6 = C). Submit 80% of all assignments (no more than two missing). Work submitted late or not following the proper format will lose points. Keep a daily journal of outside language activity with good descriptive content. Consistently get 60% on journal content. Will not use AI to produce classwork, including translation apps. Actively participate in groups using mostly English. F: To earn an F means a student has more than five absences, is missing more than three assignments, hasn't turned in their written work, hasn't followed class protocols, doesn't actively participate in class, used AI to produce classwork, and has an average score of 50% or lower on their assignments (5 = F) 学修成果の評価 Evaluation of academic achievement
