As economic globalization becomes more important, while nationalism against it also arises all over the world, it is becoming more necessary to understand how international trade and finance will work.
This course provides the basic theory and empirical findings on international economics and development economics.

First, we study the concept of comparative advantage and how this force would be driving the countries to trade between stakeholders. Also, we examine the various theories explaining the causal effects of international trade such as the Ricardian model, specific factor model, Heckscher-Ohlin model, and Melitz model. Second, by using new trade theories, we study the imperfect competition model a la Krugman and its implication for world economy and management of global companies. Lastly, we investigate the economic impact of globalization and economic integration with international factor movements such as immigration and capital flows.

経済のグローバル化が進展するにつれて、それに反対する保護主義が台頭しつつも、ますます国際貿易や国際金融の機能を理解することが必要になっています。この講義では国際経済学や開発経済学の基本的な理論と実証的な知見を学びます。

最初に、比較優位の概念を学び、国家間の貿易パターンを決めるものは何であるのか理解します。また、さまざまな代替的なモデルも学ぶことで国際貿易の決定要因を理解します。次に、新しい貿易理論を学ぶことで、世界経済の理解や国際的な企業経営に役立つ知見を獲得します。最後に、労働力や資本の移動を考慮に入れつつ、貿易政策、経済統合、グローバル化の影響を考察します。

To be able to understand the basic mechanism of international trade, trade policy, and economic integration.

1. To be able to explain the concept of comparative advantage and how it works.
2. To be able to understand the difference of strategies among imperfect market competitions.
3. To be able to explain the methods of various trade policies and their impacts on economic welfare.
4. To be able to understand the impact of economic integration and its implications.
