概要 Description
This course provides students the opportunity to learn English vocabulary, read English materials, and write about the topics in the materials in English through writing activities and grammar exercises in the textbook. Some instructions will be given in English. Important announcements such as assignment deadlines and term quizzes' schedules will be given in Japanese. Students are expected to use English throughout the course.
目的 Objectives
The aim of this course is to improve communicative skills of English through reading and writing exercises. Students will lean intensive reading skills through reading exercises. They will develop writing habits through writing assignments. The primary goal of the course is to build up students' reading and writing skills. Students are expected to read and write every class.
到達目標 Outcomes
Through this course, students should (1) build up their vocabulary, (2) be able to understand written English, and (3) be able to express themselves in writing. This course aims for CEFR B1.

Reading:
By the end of the course, students are expected be able to (1) read straightforward factual texts on familiar subjects, (2) identify the main conclusions in clearly signaled argumentative texts, (3) recognize the line of argument in the treatment of the issue presented, (4) can recognize significant points in straightforward newspaper articles on familiar subjects.

Writing:
By the end of the course, students are expected be able to write straightforward connected texts on a range of familiar subjects within his field of interest.

授業にはPCの持参が必須です。授業は完全に対面で行いますが、授業中ZOOMにも接続します。LETUSにも登録をお願いします。その他については、以下をご確認ください。

1. Students are expected to participate in class activities and group discussions.
2. Students will automatically fail once they miss FOUR lessons.
3. Arriving late (within 20 minutes) TWICE equals ONE absence.
4. Arriving more than 20 minutes late ONCE equals ONE absence.
5. Absence will be excused only when filed with an official document.
6. Students are expected to use English throughout the course.
7. Students are strongly recommended to bring their portable devices that can be logged into LETUS and Zoom.

Class 1: Ice-breaking Orientation--What is "FLUENT READER?"
The main purpose is (1) to get to know the classmates and (2) to have a general idea of how this course proceeds. Students will write a little bit about themselves.

Class 2: Unit 1 Chapter 2--Identifying main and supporting ideas, Assignment, Quiz
Students will learn to locate the main ideas and supporting ideas within an article. They will do vocabulary comprehension exercises using a short article.

Class 3: Unit 2 Chapter 2--Predicting, Assignment, Quiz
Students will learn to predict the general idea of reading from keywords. They will do vocabulary and comprehension exercises using a short article.

Class 4: Unit 3 Chapter 2--Recognizing sequence of Events, Assignment, Quiz
Students will learn to locate dates and times in a passage to recognize the timeline. They will do vocabulary and comprehension exercises using a short article.

Class 5: Unit 4 Chapter 2--Predicting, Assignment, Quiz
Students will learn how background knowledge helps them read efficiently. They will do vocabulary and comprehension exercises using a short article.

Class 6: Unit 5 Chapter 2--Predicting vocabulary, Assignment, Quiz
Students will learn to think of the vocabulary they should expect to see in a passage. They will do vocabulary and comprehension exercises using a short article.

Class 7: Unit 6 Chapter 2--Recognizing facts, Assignment, Quiz
Students will learn to distinguish facts and opinions. They will do vocabulary and comprehension exercises using a short article.

Class 8: Mid-term test, feedback

Class 9: Unit 7 Chapter 2--Noticing patterns, Assignment, Quiz
Students will learn how to predict the structure of a passage from a format. They will do vocabulary and comprehension exercises using a short article.

Class 10: Unit 8 Chapter 2--Skimming for General Ideas, Assignment, Quiz
Students will learn about skimming. They will do vocabulary and comprehension exercises using a short article.

Class 11: Unit 9 Chapter 2--Understanding the main ideas, Assignment, Quiz
Students will learn to follow the main idea of each paragraph. They will do vocabulary and comprehension exercises using a short article.
